Only Ever Yours - Louise O'Neill

This was fine! There's a particular genre of dystopia, easy-reading feminist lit about women as commodities, Handmaid's Tale-lite, and you keep reading them because they're fun and fast and every once and a while, one of them will be killer.

Will it be this one?
THIS ONE WAS NOT KILLER it was fine. freida is an eve, manufactured to become either a Companion (wife), Concubine (duh), or Chastity (nun-like teacher for future eves) for the dudes currently coming of age, because girl-babies are extinct. She and her fellow eves spend all day updating their MyFace profiles or complimenting each other's outfits (it's like Shopaholics-level of clothing descriptions up in here) or exercising, trying to claw their way up the rankings. The hierarchy is ruthless and deliberate.

But then freida's friend isobel starts behaving in a very un-eve-like fashion, gaining weight and wearing unflattering clothes and withdrawing from the frantic social frenzy and to be honest, the reveals and the ending as a whole left me kind of flat, even though it was like UNHAPPY ENDINGS FOR ALL which is often my jam of choice.

THIS WAS A BOOK AND I READ IT AND DIDN'T CLAW OUT MY OWN BRAIN.

This gif for everything forever.
